Mattress Firmness Guide: Soft to Firm Explained
Understand mattress firmness scales, why firmness is subjective and how body weight and sleeping position change the feel.
Firmness describes how soft or hard the sleep surface feels when you lie on it. It is not the same thing as support: a mattress can feel plush while still supporting alignment, or feel firm while creating pressure in the wrong places.
The 1–10 scale
Reviewers often use a 10-point scale, with 1 extremely soft and 10 extremely firm. Most mainstream mattresses cluster in the middle rather than at the extremes.
Body weight
A lighter sleeper compresses the layers less and may experience a mattress as firmer. A heavier sleeper compresses them more and may perceive the same bed as softer.
Sleeping position
Side sleepers usually need more surface give at the shoulders and hips. Back and stomach sleepers often need stronger resistance beneath the midsection.
Do not chase a number
Firmness scores are useful orientation, not universal measurements. Give extra weight to your body size, position and a realistic at-home trial.
Bottom line
Use this guide as a decision framework, then verify current specifications, pricing and return terms before buying. Mattress fit is personal, and no single model is best for every sleeper.
