Mattress Thickness Guide: How Tall Should a Mattress Be?
Understand mattress height, layer thickness and why a taller mattress is not automatically more supportive or durable.
Mattress thickness is the total height of all layers. It affects how much room designers have for comfort and support materials, but height by itself does not tell you quality.
Comfort-layer depth
Thicker comfort systems can provide more room for pressure relief, particularly for heavier side sleepers, but excessively soft layers can also increase sink.
Support-core depth
A substantial support core helps stabilize the sleep surface. The material and density matter as much as the number of inches.
Bed height
A thick mattress on a tall foundation can make getting in and out of bed harder for shorter people or people with mobility limitations.
Example
The Layla Essential is 9 inches tall, using a 2-inch comfort layer over a 7-inch support core—an intentionally simple, lower-profile design.
Bottom line
Use this guide as a decision framework, then verify current specifications, pricing and return terms before buying. Mattress fit is personal, and no single model is best for every sleeper.
