A mattress is a system of layers. The comfort system manages pressure and feel, while the support core carries most of the structural load.

Cover

The outer fabric affects surface feel, stretch and moisture handling, but usually contributes less to deep support than the layers below.

Comfort system

Memory foam, polyfoam, latex and fiber layers shape pressure relief and contouring.

Transition layer

Some mattresses use a firmer intermediate layer to prevent abrupt contact with the support core and to manage sink.

Support core

Dense polyfoam, innerspring coils or latex provide the main structural support and influence edge behavior, bounce and airflow.

Bottom line

Use this guide as a decision framework, then verify current specifications, pricing and return terms before buying. Mattress fit is personal, and no single model is best for every sleeper.
