How Does Memory Foam Work in a Mattress?

Memory foam is viscoelastic polyurethane foam. In practical terms, it softens and conforms under pressure, then slowly returns toward its original shape after the pressure is removed.
Contouring
The foam compresses more where your body applies greater force. That can spread load across a wider surface and reduce concentrated pressure.
Response speed
Different formulations recover at different speeds. Slower-response foam creates a deeper ‘hug,’ while faster-response foam feels easier to move across.
Heat and airflow
Traditional dense foam can trap heat. Manufacturers use strategies such as open-cell structures, perforations and gel or other infusions, but whole-mattress construction still matters.
Support comes from below
Memory foam is usually a comfort material, not the entire support system. A firmer polyfoam or coil core underneath helps keep the body from sinking indefinitely.
